What is PropTech?

Proptech, or property technology, refers to the use of digital tools and advanced technologies to transform the real estate sector. By improving processes like energy efficiency, property management, and design through innovations such as AI, Internet of Things, and platform-based solutions, proptech helps create smarter, more sustainable buildings and cities.

Stockholm doesn’t just follow trends in sustainable innovation—it sets them, offering a blueprint for the cities of tomorrow. The future of sustainable building innovation and property maintenance begins in Stockholm!

As Sweden’s capital and tech powerhouse, Stockholm is home to a vibrant community of companies pioneering advancements in energy-efficient solutions, digital property management, and AI-driven design.

VC INVESTMENTS IN PROTPECH 2021-2024

In 2024, the Swedish proptech industry received investments totaling $324 million.

The contech and proptech sectors play a pivotal role in this growth. While contech (construction technology) focuses on optimizing the design, planning, and building processes, proptech drives efficiency and innovation in real estate management and services. Together, these sectors are revolutionizing how we design, build, and maintain infrastructure, enhancing both functionality and sustainability.

Stockholm exemplifies this success. The city hosts Europe’s largest information and technology cluster in Kista. With one of Europe’s highest startup rates, Stockholm is a natural hub for forward-thinking investors and entrepreneurs.

Stockholm’s success is supported by proactive government policies, a strategic innovation ecosystem, and regional collaborations such as Stockholm Business Alliance - a partnership of 55 municipalities. Among them is Linköping, the winner of the European Capital of Innovation Award 2023 in the “European Rising Innovative City” category. Linköping actively invests in IoT technologies and smart solutions, accelerating the green transition and improving quality of life through data-driven infrastructure enhancements.

Advantages of Stockholm

For investors, Stockholm presents an unparalleled opportunity. The city’s combination of cutting-edge technology, world-class clusters, and commitment to sustainability makes it an ideal market for those seeking both financial returns and a positive global impact. Investing in Stockholm’s built environment is about more than profits—it’s about contributing to a smarter, greener, and more innovative future.

According to former European Central Bank President Mario Draghi’s widely discussed competitiveness report, Sweden exemplifies how a strong social model and a thriving technological environment can be mutually reinforcing. With a tech sector more than twice as productive as the EU average, Sweden demonstrates that targeted programs for creating high-quality jobs, combined with well-skilled workers living in affordable cities, are key drivers of success. Draghi highlights that integrating high-quality employment with robust social protection and redistribution is a fundamental value of the EU model—one that must be preserved to enable the EU’s transformation into a more technologically advanced society.

Why Stockholm is a world-leading tech and innovation hub
Perhaps it's our relatively remote location just 500 miles from the Arctic Circle that gives Stockholmers such an outward-looking mentality. Or maybe it’s that we’ve always understood that openness and collaboration turn good ideas into great ones.
